Excape TO New York

Deconstructing-Jim will be bolting "to" New York City this week to review two new music events. I leave Boston tomorrow (Wednesday 5/6) on the ridiculously inexpensive BoltBus and arrive in NYC on 34th Street just in time for a bowl of spicy red Manhattan clam chowder (which is not at all like the starchy fish stew served in rustic New England). I'll be staying at the "Leo House" on 23rd Street (between 8th and 9th) near the famed Chelsea Hotel.

Wednesday night I'll hear The Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble, The FLUX Quartet, and Ostravská banda at the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall - Starr Theater, in a concert of "mod" music that includes major works by Ligeti and Carter.

On Thursday I'm heading back uptown to Lincoln Center to hear the NY Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall play "The World in Flower" by Peter Lieberson and works by Mahler.

The day will start with an open rehearsal at 9:45 AM. At 6:30 PM there is a "Here and Now" Panel Discussion/Pre-concert event, and at 7:30 PM the orchestra will premiere Lieberson's much anticipated piece for two solo vocalists, chorus, and orchestra.

You can hear an interview with Peter Lieberson about his upcoming piece in a Podcast published by the NY Phil. as aural program notes.... http://feeds.feedburner.com/NewYorkPhilharmonicPodcast

On Friday 5/8 I'll try to fit in visits to the MoMA on W 53rd Street and the Neue Galerie on Fifth Avenue to see the Klimt's and drink strong coffee before heading back to Boston on"Boltbus."

Stay tuned to this blog for a full report about my NYC music and art excursion.
